I'm wondering because my friends got into a discussion about Utada's involvement with the Kingdom Hearts series, so there was debate over "Hikari" and "Passion". Well, their English-language versions mostly. Both of my friends agreed "Simple and Clean" was MUCH better than "Passion", but I couldn't agree with them there. Lyrically, the English version of "Hikari" doesn't do much for me vs. the Japanese version. They are both different songs, but they also both serve as album closers for two separate albums. "Passion", I think, serves better as a climactic album closer vs. "Hikari". |

Oh absolutely.
And Simple & Clean's lyrics are just kind of blah. This really wonderful song about growing older and becoming an adult and being excied about your future but sad about leaving your childhood becomes a generic love song... |

From the little I know of her, her English lyrics have always ranged from bland to cringe level embarrassing. It's pretty weird her Japanese and English lyrics are so different.

I don't care what anyone says, Exodus's lyrics are amazing.
People kind of forget that she has plenty of bad/bland Japanese lyrics btw. |

I've always said that you can easily tell that Utada writes her own lyrics, but you can't tell that she writes her own music -- as far as quality goes -- she does have her own styles of writing.

She's really conscious about her lyrics too, which is great. I read an interview with her where she said she chose to write from a more gender-neutral perspective because she didn't identify with very girlish lyrics, so hers tend to be kind of boyish.

So has anyone bothered going back to this in full since release?

I haven't even listened to it yet. I feel no compulsion to do so. I tend to like cover albums but this isn't tempting me in the slightest?

the whole album save the ayu track is pretty "easy listening", not the sort of thing u'd get terribly excited over. I still listen to the first half of the album and miliyah's for you with some degree of regularity..
