Metal Gear 4 stands on it's own as a game you really don't need to have played the others at all.. theirs enough flashbacks and storytelling for you to know the story so previous games are not required!! you have to play 4 though the film scenes are the best i have ever seen!!!

I HAVE to play them. It would ruin the whole experience for me because I would constantly feel like missing something. Especially when there IS actually an overal story like MGS
That's why I never watched any Star Trek show. I would have to see all episodes in order starting from one which was kinda impossible on normal tv

Currentyl playing Final Fantasy IV for the DS, which is really awesome. Thus I decided to name and paint my little companion in the game awesom.
That game is really good, they kept all the gold old mechanics and gameplay and gave it a nice new graphic they even use for camera angles and such in cut scenes. Combined with a good voice cast the game really know how to present itself well. A really good game.

is that the one with Kain the Dragoon ? i think i played it years ago on my PS1 (NTSC import) maybe i'll pick this re-release up..

MGS4 = GotY I was really satisfied by the game's story unlike MGS2 and 3. I just wish things had turned out a little different for a couple of characters, but I guess that's just a minor thing that may not matter to others.
I would recommend playing the other games first to refresh your memory on everything. It makes the experience even better and it doesn't even take long to complete them all.
