Her doing stuff in English never really bothered me much, but I won't deny that sometimes I can't tell wtf she's saying without the lyrics in front of me.... lately especially. I put that down to the absolute atroctious mastering on everything more than anything though.
And yes, I was one of those people that heard "Liars, fat cats and theives" on Mittei Monogatari as "Liars, faggots and theives" the first time round :-p

Some of the early stuff like Sigma is still pretty indecipherable. Daihakken might have had her best English. That and Sweet Spot.

Shiina is nothing if not an advocate of Japanese culture, and as such she has expressed on many occasions some pride in Japan. There is nothing wrong with this. She has never actually advocated any military aggression. She does use some military imagery in her performances, to create the "Ringo Army," but that's purely performance.
People on 2chan have been calling her out recently as a "traitor," selling out Japan to Korean economic interests, since apparently that cell phone she's endorsing is actually made in Korea. So I think we need to stop worrying what the ultra right wing thinks, because they are a bunch of idiots. If anything, they should take some pride in having a country that has Shiina Ringo in it. I know I'm envious.

While she's definitely a great advocate of Japanese culture, the flags, the old car named hitler, etc. are definitely troubling to say the least... I do believe she's not doing it with deep malice at heart (I think she once said in response to the controversy over Nippon that "it's fine if only some people understand what I mean" or something like that, but don't quote me on it), but I think she should rethink what that flag means especially as japan is still embroiled in disputes with other East Asian nations over wartime aggression...
At the very least, I hope the goods with that symbol don't make it to Taiwan @_@ Also, mrnarse, kamisama was performed.. I've seen a few lists out together by people who were just gathering set list info from their tlists but weren't there ^^; |

With NIPPON and Brand New Civilisation - it's quite hard to ignore all that imagery, I think.
Even her lyrical content alludes to those themes. Will admit, though, that my command of Japanese isn't strong enough to know if she's genuinely right wing nat, or if she's ironically reappropriating those themes. |

She named her old Mercedes "Hitler" because it was German and it was a shitbox. I used to have a similar car, and frankly I wish I'd thought of it, because it was utter crap. She wore a swastika in the "Koko de kiss shite" video because Sid Vicious did and it was "shocking," not because she was advocating national socialism.
As for the flag, what it means to the rest of Asia and what it means to Japan are *never* going to be in agreement. Speaking as an American, we are if anything even more proud of our flag, and there are a great many people who hate our flag just as much, and with equally good reason. Both the American flag and the Japanese flag are downright *offensive* to much of the rest of the world. And while I do not condone many of the things that have been done in the name of that flag - quite honestly, America has done its best to fuck over the rest of the world at absolutely every opportunity - I don't give a damn if people fly it at concerts and sporting events and such. Ringo shouldn't either.

She should make an English version of NIPPON just to fuck with people.

That would be awesome. But I would argue that Ararashii Bunmei Kaika already covers much of the same ground.

I can stomach Atarashii but can't handle NIPPON.
Why is this? I can't even figure it out. They're both the same fucking song afterall. I've always wondered what the Japanese public's reaction to NIPPON would have been if it wasn't a tie in with the world cup/if it was just a standalone single. Would people even give a fuck? Would it sell whatsoever? Same with this new Coke song, it's selling well, but is it because of the song or the commercial? I mean, do people actually LIKE these songs, or like what they represent? If only there was some way to measure this. Also, With this new single, how many are buying for the raffle entry only? Does an entry come with the digital version??? Cause I know there's people who already have entered it before the physical release? If so, makes it all feel like a big cop-out/AKB style sales grab. It would make me feel a little less WTF though.

Because Atarashii is a good song with a relatively complex political message, while NIPPON is basically just cheerleading written in a format to suit the display of World Cup team scores during the evening news.
I don't mean to diminish the very real evil that Japan brought upon its neighbors. And I don't think Ringo does either; she knows damn well what went on and Egg is proof of it. But like it or not, the naval ensign simply does not have the same meaning to the Japanese that it does to many in the rest of Asia. Quite frankly everyone would be better served by accepting that rather than trying to force it to change, which is only going to make the right wing even more militant.
