They're the only Australian band I listen to.
Though in the US, Five Seconds of Summer are popular. And on the Kiwi side of things Kimbra and Lorde have indie cred. Also, awww, Secret Rituals was amazing why would they regress? |

^ my only guess is for live reasons... while I love Secret Rituals the most too, it's undeniable earlier stuff translates better live.
I don't listen to many Aussie bands either, I just can't stand how non-forward thinking or generic most of it is/when they 'put on' the Aussie accent more than natural- and believe me, they do this in pretty much EVERYTHING, blegh. I'd say Nick Cave is our best asset in music, but of course there's the ongoing (rather mean spirited) debate of whether he really is an Aussie anymore (he claims he is at least). A lot of people worldwide really loved the Avalanches, who I still don't really get why. As for the damn Kiwis (just to add some stereotyping about the friendly Aussie vs Kiwi war to the conversation) Kimbra's new album is much more enjoyable than Lorde for me.

Listen to the new Grates single here. I love it. Definitely the most 'punk' they've ever sounded- sounds angrier and dirtier too.

Doesn't really remind me of the first two albums more than secret ritual; but I dig the dark tones in hiding. Come out yo.

And so the full Grates album is out.
It's fantastic. I have no better way to describe my feelings. It clocks in at 30:33 in total, and there's not a single moment where it lets up, every song has that brute energy you get from just going in and recording songs you've just written and making it as raw as you can yet still sound professional. Well worth the time, Ive spun it 4 times since its midnight launch last night and I keep wanting to go back. In-fact, I'm gonna spin it again. Favorite tracks: Friends With Scum (just so brutal sounding, definitely the hardest I've ever heard from this band) and I Wish I Was Alone (which apparently got it's idea from an argument between John and Page, which is pretty neat). Finally, a good Australian album for 2014.

It's a good album, very raw no nonsense rock fun. I liked Friend with Scum, Dirty Hands and It Won't Hurt Anymore most. Bit more sober than their previous records going by the atmosphere of sound but it still makes me smile, bob my head and make me wanna shuffle my butt around. Love the grates!
