I hate it when anyone says something artistic is "better" than something else even when I agree. It's practically impossible to prove. That's why I avoid using it and titled this thread your "favorite" album and not "the best album of 2007".

Somehow I should've saw that reply coming.

*doctors up the database as if nothing opinionated was ever said*

I just wanted to throw that comparison out there, because I think people are too busy comparing Variety to Heisei Fuuzoku or Adult or Utaite Myoli Vol. 1, that they've never thought to compare it to what Hirama has done lately. The main difference between the two albums without going into specifics, is that When I feel the sun in tokyo EXCEEDED my expectations while Variety DIDN'T MEET my expectations. It doesn't help that I already had different expectations for each album to begin with, but I just thought I'd express that's where I'm coming from.

Well, comparing Ringo to Hirama is just like comparing her to anything else; he just happened to have worked with her for a while. I think it's just easier to compare an artist with their own works, especially one like Ringo because her works are really different from most of what is out there.

Just out of curiosity, what were your expectations for those two albums? I was expecting Kyouki rock from Hirama, since that was the first album I heard by him, so when I didn't hear that, I was disappointed and didn't enjoy it at all until about a month later when I got over the fact that I thought he was wasting his talent. And Variety, well I only expected the best from them, but I have to admit that all the hate going on before it got to me a bit and I was expecting just an OK release.

I wasn't expecting Variety to be a "We're doing a concert soon. Let's make these studio recordings into ready-to-perform arrangements".

With Variety, I was expecting something more studio-oriented like Adult. Production-wise, they set the bar pretty low with Variety so they could jump over it everytime they do a concert, and to some extent you might say that's what they did with Kyoiku, but this time the compositions aren't as good, and the sound quality is better. I wanted Variety to be its own isolated deal that couldn't be duplicated, like most of Utaite Myoli Vol. 1, where very few of the songs are ever featured in concert, and the half the ones we get, undergo dramatic rearramgement. That's what I expected Variety to be, and I don't think that's unreasonable, or anywhere near impossible.

It's not to say I want Tokyo Jihen to do only studio-oriented albums, but I figured if most/all of these songs weren't originally composed-for-TJ, then they could throw in guest instrumentalists and studio effects, and try to make this album more... avant-garde.

I'll also add Gogol Bordello - Super Taranta! To my list. I forgot it was released this year. Not my favourite album, but I really like it.

And Larrikin Love - The Freedom Spark. Although technically a 2006 release, I only managed to find it this year (It appears to be nowhere). It's a fantastically catchy album. Think 'The Libertines' meets a gypsy bluegrass band. If 'Happy As Annie' isn't the catchiest thing you hear all year, I'll eat my straw hat. But you'll have trouble finding the album to find out... maybe *cough*.
