Sandee Chan
I thought that the people here might enjoy music by this woman called Sandee Chan (陈珊妮). I regard her as sort of a Taiwanese version (she's from Taiwan, and sings in Mandarin) of Ringo. She's had a rather prolific and critically-recognised music career, doing bizarre rock songs in her earlier days, and now, she's gone and done a slightly more avant garde, dreamy pop album, "If there is one thing that is important" (which just won her Best Mandarin Female Artist at the recent Golden Melody Awards in Taiwan). On top of being a great performing artist, she has also produced and written songs for several other singers.
I absolutely adore that most recent album of hers, so here're some clips. "If there is one thing that is important" (如果有一件事是重要的) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkgKneNHgg0 "Etude" (離別曲 - the melody for this was taken from Chopin's "Etude") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXVRGhxS_tk "Perfume" (香水 - this is a self-cover; she originally wrote this for HK singer Nicholas Tse) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcFeXwRJG-4 Last edited by gekokujyo : 2009.06.28 at 01:07 AM. |

I loooooove the "Moan" clip. I haven't really explored the dream pop genre too extensively, but I do like The Cranberries and Faye Wong. So much so that I'm surprised that I don't know more artists like them -- but this is fantastic. Thanks for introducing her to me.

Sandee Chan was commonly known as one of the biggest fan of Ringo in Taiwanese musical industry. Personally I think her pulled out the musical essence she extracted from SR materials quite nicely despite the melody, which IMO is the most essential charm of music. Her compositions are a little bit bland compared to Shiina's.
Yet, I regard Sandee's side project with Veegay(HK) and Cola King(TW, poet/illustrator), The Material Girls(拜金小姐) one of my favorite projects. Maybe the more distinct image of TMG gave Sandee and Veegay more dramatic stages for composition. Saw her live in Hangzhou in May. The outdoor environment did not play her to the utmost, but her performance still stood out as an enjoyable piece. |
