The speakers and/or headphones along with the source audio is more important than the player imo.

I used to listen to lossless files, but they take up so much room, and I didn't notice a huge difference between them and 320kb/s mp3's.

I use Yuin PK1 earbuds. Earbuds have always felt most comfortable to me, so that's what I stick with. PK1's with a simple portable headphone amp (i use a fiio e5) and I'm happy. For a player, I just use my zune 80gb.

I use a cheap Sansa Clip+ and some nice Audio Technica ATH M50's. The headphones are whats important, but seriously, $90 for Headphones was REALLY stretching it for me. I would NEVER pay more than $100 for headphones; my ears are not even that good.

Recently bought a pair of Denon AH-D1100s, and for the price I've fallen in love with them. Amazing bass response.

My last pair of headphones was from Bose. Is it just me, or...is Bose a bit overrated? (beyond their noise-cancelling technology)

They're exactly like Monster Cable.

Bose is a well-recognized brand which does sound better than the cheapest stuff, but there are always better things you can buy from other brands for the same price as a Bose or a Monster product.

The only people who buy bose are the people who don't know anything about... sound.

But the whole hi-fi industry has a lot of snake oil in it... Cables prolly being the #1...

I had bought those Bose headphones about five years ago, so I'll try not to be insulted by that

I do consider myself an audiophile now.

^ The FiiO E7 can be really good for the price. Really depends on your headphones. Do you need it to be portable? Does it need to have a DAC? The E5 is OK and can be found for less than $20 USD.

@the most curious thing
To be fair, the marketing people at bose are top notch. They understand the market and position themselves to be accessible, and not exclusive/snobbish. I do like the fact that bose is kind of a stepping stone into the high-end audio world. That being said, I don't like the sound... In fact many of the "audiophiles" don't. If only they refined their sound a little, they wouldn't be getting as much bad rep as they are now.

But perhaps they have different priorities.

My current audio set up is MacBook speakers and iPod earphones. hahaha. It's a joke really. I need to get myself a pair of studio monitors soon.

I have tried Shure E525 and Westone UM3, but I still prefer my Etymotic ER-4P.

What is a DAC? My mp3 player does not support lossless files, it's only a Sony A846 Would it be a bit wasted if I only play with 320k?
