Yes, yes and yes to José James, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae... (I didn't know Monae before EMF...) José James needs to stop previewing his songs on his myspace. I'm sure I heard more than what's there now, and we need surprises! And I'm going to see him live ... People's impressions of the new Badu album sound exciting.

Looking forward to Salyu as well why not... I still love that film after all these years (Tobenai Tsubasa is one of my "I miss Japan" songs... )

I thought JR would mention beat creator TOKiMONSTA as well as Flying Lotus [edit: or Sharon Jones!]. So far I've heard her short but dreamy and inspiring set on Mary Ann Hobbs' BBC show (starts around 33 min) and highly recommended mixes of hip-hop and other interesting things downloadable from her myspace. She is interviewed as working towards a first album proper.
Tokimonsta - The World Is Ours

I also need to mention dance producers Floating Points and Joy Orbison since they're similarly sonically inspiring. I don't know what albums they have planned or just more singles. Joy Orbison's anthem Hyph Mngo got a lot of attention in 2009.

(Only wanted one YT vid in the end...)

Does FlyLo have an album out this year?
Definitely looking foward to a TOKiMONSTA ep type thing, especially since she's been signed on to FlyLo's label. She's in good hands.
Looking forward to the Floating Points vinyl dropping on 11 Jan - People's Potential.

I'm still not sure what I think of Joy Orbison. I like him.... but Hyph Mngo as the track of 2009...? hmmmm.

I also need to get whatever SBTRKT puts out this year.

New album from Sharon Jones is GREAT NEWS! That means they're gonna tour again! Need. to. see. them. live!

so_cold - I wonder if Kyoto Jazz Massive are gonna have anything out this year? Remember they had performed a new track last year... what's it called... "Stand up"! And they said they're working on a new album.

I remember me and a friend making fun of her Galang video back in secondary school a few years ago. I didn't guess she'd get as far as she did. I haven't heard anything outside of Galang and that song (All I wanna do is... bang bang bang chink...and take your money) taken from The Clash , but she seems very popular with the critics.

New M.I.A. album! Nice!

Madonna has started working on a new album too apparently.

Sometime early 2010, nothing specific. She's been taking AGES with this album so she's 'compensating' by releasing two half albums together.

Joanna Newsom's new album 'Have One On Me' - February 19th Australia (February 23rd Worldwide)

Today, Spunk is thrilled to announce the forthcoming Joanna Newsom album ‘Have One On Me’, due for release February 19. This is Joanna’s third full length album and is a sophisticated and enchanting collection of work from this unparalleled talent. Her last record ‘Ys’ was a conceptual masterpiece of ethereal harp, lush vocals and expansive, complex orchestrations arranged by Van Dyke Parks, and was recently voted one of the Albums of the Decade by Pitchfork and Mojo Magazine.

The album is released in Australia via Spunk February 19, and released the rest of the world February 23.

via Spunk (her Australian distributor)
