That's weird. It's certainly "music". It's the KZK of Shibuka-kei, the Dark Side of the Moon. I've listened to it maybe 200 times. Fantasma is not unusually challenging music, just unusually interesting.
It is a headphone album. One limited edition even came with earbuds. So put a copy on your portable player and listen passively next time you take a train. And read the linked text beforehand. It's not that lengthy and by the same guy who wrote The Legacy of Shibuya-kei, so you know it's written well. |

You know, if I'm going to write a paper about Shibuya-kei, I probably should you know?
And yeah, I usually listen to music on the train, so I'll put this on tomorrow then. |

All this Cornelius talk makes me wanna ask TeslaGuy what he thinks of his missus, Takako Minekawa's material?
I think it's essential listening of course. Especially Roomic Cube.

I just discovered Takako Minekawa yesterday, actually. I liked her, but the person who recommended it to me said it was recommended for fans of Utada. I didn't see the connection at all...

Sure, I really like her work, perhaps more than Oyamada's previous girlfriend Kahimi Karie. Not certain if Roomic Cube or Fun9 (produced by Oyamada) is my favorite. Need to pull those CDs out and listen again. Been a while. She also has recently collaborated on two albums with Chinese American guitarist Dustin Wong that I need to give a listen to.

I'm going to have to side on my friend with this one. The thing I like about Flipper's Guitar is that even at their most experimental they are still songs with strong pop sensibilities (like Shiina). I'm not really interested in Cornelius's electro-acoustic experimentations. THere are only a couple of "songs" on their that I could find myself wanting to listen to. Or even recognizing as a distinct song? At a certain point I could no longer tell when the song breaks were, and not in a song-cyle-way. It's like an almost vaguely-poppy Onkyokei...
I may need an additional listen. After reviewing my sources on Shibuya-kei (including all those Neo-Japonisme articles), I'm beginnig to think my research question is on very thin grounds, and probably doing SS-era Shiina would be more fruitfal. For anyone who is curious: How is the Shibuya-kei movement a re-definiition of Japanese heritage, as an example of cosmopolitanism and a rejection of "traditional" concepts of heritage? How does Shiina Ringo use aspects of Japanese heritage to commentate and subvert contemporary Japanese society? I am not enjoying ethnomusicology as much as I hoped I would. If these don't work, I'm going to just have to do it on Enka. Christine Yano's works are interesting, and I like certain singers/songs, but the genre as a whole... |

I looked up Onkyokei. Why not just say free-form and/or lowercase.
I feel like I'm reading anime fansubs sometimes. That topic sounds a music interest killer tbh...

The Dark Side of the Moon is hardly listenable save for 2 or 3 songs. This Cornelia album sounds like wank to me.
"Clever" things make people feel stupid, and unexpected things make them feel scared. Last edited by Inseu : 2014.11.20 at 04:16 PM. |
