Yeah, I see where your coming from. Got to draw the line somewhere though, and we can't turn it into en England vs Scotland vs Ireland vs Wales debate because England would slaughter them, and there aren't any Scot's, Welsh or Irish here for me to taunt and tease . And there are limited poll answers...

You wanna take the time and list every country, be my guest =p
I lumped em together as best I could without getting droll or too nit-picky. Central Eurasia is by far and away the biggest offender, yet yer not pking on that. That could be like, a third of the earth's landmass =p

I really can't decide since I've only been listening to TJ/SR, Quruli, a few bands from Korea, Jamiroquai, and The Seatbelts for a year now. What is in Scandinavia by the way?

Noob thread digging...
Great thread! I know I'm late but I can't resist adding my tuppence. It's so hard to pick!!! I'm going to go through a list of artists that I think are great to the point that their music can hypnotize...
Starting with Canada, because obviously where you grow up is where most of the music you're familiar with will be from...grouped together in a sort of similar style way...very loosely: Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Anne Murray, Sarah McLachlan The Tragically Hip (Bonus points if you think you know what Downey's singing about...), Rush Bif Naked (so what? I adore her...Winnipeg gal), Alanis Morrissette Broken Social Scene, The Weakerthans, Royal Wood There's more, but I'm forgetting them, so I suppose they can't influence me that greatly, can they?? USA: Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Dylan, Link Wray, Carl Perkins, Elvis, Leadbelly, John Lee Hooker, Beach Boys, CCR, Jefferson Airplane, SRV The Pixies, The Breeders, The Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers Throwing Muses (anything Kristen Hersh), The White Stripes The sheer mass of numbers that collectively overwhelms other countries' musicians outstrips everything else. It's more about collective influence, I think. France: Django Reinhardt, Josephine Baker, Edith Piaf. Daft Punk!! UK: Beatles, Kinks, Who, Rolling Stones, Clapton, Cream, Led Zepp Radiohead, Republica, Sinead O'Connor (don't kill me cause I'm throwing her in here with the UK) CoLD SToRAGE, Fluke, Chemical Bros, Orbital (some of these I think night not be UK but now I can't remember, sorry...), Mogwai Huge collective influence from the UK too, but I think the mass of blues from the USA overwhelms the UK. Japan: Shiina Ringo and Tokyo Jihen (since I just discovered them I can't be too specific other than saying most of what I've heard blows my mind and Ringo is now one of my musical gods-but there are many, lol) Michio Kurihara (he is the "ghost" behind some magical songs, not just with the band Ghost. Especially with White Heaven) BORIS, or Boris, or boris. The heaviest band on earth musicwise, and not afraid to play whatever the heck they want. /W\ (And in Wata's cover of Angel, her solo has the power to make people weep, then keep hitting the replay button constantly. I recommend this song to ANYONE and EVERYONE.) DJ Krush, AKFG, Mai Yamane (maybe just one album each from these, but still important!) The Blankey Jet City ROCK Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Yoko Kanno the pillows (although their new, more pop-oriented stuff is less to my liking) With Japan, I think their education system produces more talented players per capita, and a more broad musical spectrum (as in, absorbing different styles of music together). I also think the common practice of collaborations in their music (and entertainment) industry helps produce more inspiration--playing music with people who are equally great or far greater than you pushes you to strive for higher heights. That is just my vague uninformed bias guessing, but it makes sense to me. I'd love to see the above mentioned musicians get their deserved fame around the world. Misc: Wang Changyuan (China): incredible composer and guzheng player!Fighting the Typhoon FTW. Nana Mouskouri, Maria Callas (Kalageropoulous) (Greece) ABBA, Bjork (Sweden, Iceland) Harry Belafonte (Jamaica? can't remember now) I want to vote for Canadian music, but I think a lot of its appeal is intrinsically linked to being Canadian, which could be argued for any country's music, but of course that's where I'm from. I get the whole vibe of Joni Mitchell in her teens riding her bike through the waving grass in the midst of the prairies, a cigarette in her mouth, and composing a masterpiece upon leaving her meditative spot in the midst of the boonies and returning to her piano at home (in the midst of the boonies). But the truth is, there aren't any Joni Mitchells besides her around. All of the best Canadian musicians in my opinion are pretty much done (or were done fifteen years ago). A lot of the new musicians I hear on CBC Radio sound okay, but I don't get the hype surrounding them (Hawksley Workman, :blarg). I don't hear a musical tapestry woven into a song, I just hear boring progressions (with interesting and likeable lyrics, but still boring). The music doesn't make want to sprint to the nearest store and shell out hundreds of dollars on their CDs. So I have to vote for Japan. When I can rock out to a song and memorize its lyrics when I have little to no knowledge of a language, and remain obsessed with the song over scarily long periods of time, it wins. Japanese music seems to uphold quality songwriting in new music, not necessarily all of its music (pop in general=icky), but enough that there is true greatness in some of it. I try hard to find the same quality in English songs, and fail for the most part. Japan is the country which is putting out quality music right now, not just decades ago (not that I mind picking out all their great old stuff too ). It is possible that there are some Canadian bands out there playing godly music in a coffee shops and none of the brainless music execs have signed them yet. I can dream, right? It took Lightfoot awhile to get signed...
