Its time for another one of these unpopular posts. Consider this: “What I'm listening to: girly singer-songwriter edition.”
Nepenthe Julianna Barwick
Her 2011 album The Magic Place even made me turn my head. But where else could her music go? On Nepethe, Barwick ups her game melodically and production-wise. Barwick's angelic voice shines providing wonderful harmonies and even catchy melodies. She makes bolder production choices with more instrumentation and even has a few songs that resemble “traditional” musix like “One Half.” An early second-half of 2013 favorite. If You Leave Daughter
Daughter a UK band and platform for the singer-songwriter-y stylings of frontwoman Elena Tonra. Daughter juxtaposes Tonra's warm blanket vocals with a heavy, moody, and sometimes dark atmosphere. If You Leave is a remarkable debut that I truly hope they build on. That Iron Taste Marika Hackman
Marika Hackman has earned much of buzz in the past month off the back of her album, That Iron Taste. Hackman's music is less busy than the previously mentioned Daughter album, but feels more ornate, and better produced. Hackman's personality pierces through everything and makes for an album worthy of repeat listens. A Constant Sea Heliotropes
Similar to the Speedy Ortiz album I posted about a few weeks ago, Heliotropes is an all-girl 90's revival act, with a decidedly power-pop, Luscious Jackson – Veruca Salt slant. If that sounds like anything you want in your life, then do givea listen. You won't be dissapointed. The band settles into some crunchy grooves that are still really accessible. Personal Record Eleanor Friedberger
I only listened to this record for the first time yesterday, but I found I really dug it. Friedberger has a power-pop-Carly-Simon way about her music that I haven't heard in a while which is very refreshing. Unreal Hebronix
Last one to buck the theme of the day. Hebronix is Daniel Blumberg, nee Yuck frontman. In Hebronix he takes the jangly alt-rock sound of his former band's solid 2011 debut and takes it in a more leisurely and sprawling direction. Like many rock frontmen, there's plenty to dislike about the guy – except his songwriting, which is as on point as ever. “Wild Whim” is one of my favorite songs of the year.

Be smart, don't be a retard and see Of Monsters And Men live before they make a sucky second album and ruin it all like The Strokes :-p
In other words, just saw 'em tonight with Passion Pit and a few other indie flavors of the month and they shit on everyone with their amazing live set.

Because I'm not ironic enough.
Deadgrandma: have you heard Ensemble Pearl? It is essentially a half-Boris, half Sun-O))) supergroup - album.
