Default Sakamoto Ryuichi

Do you like his music?
I was a his fan when I was high teen in mid 80s.

But when he released "Neo Geo" album in 1987, I disappointed it.
It was like saying "I wanna be sold American market,
so I must make simple pop album which they can acccept."

My analog records.

Thousand Knives (1978)
B2-Unit (1980)
Left-Handed Dream (1981)
The End of Asia (1982) Dancerie
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence (1983)
Coda (1983)
Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia (1984)
Esperanto (1985)
Field Work (1985) EP with Thomas Dolby
Futurista (1986)

I've only heard of him through the m-flo collabo and some hip-hop song that he did music for. >_< So, is he a DJ and singer?? (I remember some distorted vocals in the m-flo collabo, but I don't know if it was him.) What kind of music did he make before Neo Geo?

I do!

Love his work on Tony Takitani, Snake Eyes, and Femme Fatale.

He also had a nice little appearance in Abel Ferrara's New Rose Hotel.

He is an Academy-winning musican (Best Original Score for Last Emperor in 1987, with David Byrne and Cong Su).

He debut as a keybordist of synth techno trio Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978.
So he was initially considered as a man of systh/techno music
But he also attended prestigious art school and earned M.A. ,
is good piano player, has legitimate composition ability,
also has electronic and ethnic music knowledge.

IMHO, until 1987, he made really interesting musics
that I had excited every music from him.
1980 release electric "B-2 Unit" and
1981 release accostic "Left Handed Dream" were
surprisingly completly different type of musics.

I'm a huge fan of his work in YMO, and his production/arrangement work in the early '80s is just ridiculously golden. His albums with his then-wife, Akiko Yano, are brilliant. I also like his work with Taeko Ohnuki in the late '70s and '80s.

Though I've never been a huge fan of his solo albums. They tend to be too experimental or subtle for my tastes. I like when he's super poppy and magical. If I had to choose, though, my favorites would be Illustrated Musical Enyclopedia and Left-Handed Dream (which has Adrian Belew, one of my favorite guitarists). I also adore his appearances on Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Masami Tsuchiya's Rice Music. And...I love that recent Nine Horses album (Syvlian, Steve Jansen, etc.) that he plays on.

He's obviously a virtuoso, and one reason why I'm interested in Japanese music. Japanese music owes so much to him and his bro Haruomi Hosono.

Especially/Typically in Esperanto album, he used to put an experimental one
like comtemporary music possessed electric piece.
He still make that kind of musics like Discord album but it can be accceptable as a ambient/new age context.

Left-Handed Dream also has Semba Kiyohiko as percussionist.
