I love this, it's like dreamy secret agent music. I'm not sure the image of Vincent Cassel with a gun goes with the tune but that's all YT has...

@so_cold: what is it about TOKi? Why do I like everything she makes?
I don't agree with the title of the tune. Anyway, merry christmas everyone

LoneLady
I just discovered LoneLady from an EOY list, and I like some of their (her?) songs, though I'm still making up my mind how much I like them. It sounds very 80s to me, though I think I detect hints of more recent pop/R&B in aspects of the vocal style (but don't let that scare you away if you hate that stuff because I don't like most of it either), but overall it sounds like something that could easily sit alongside new wave and post-punk of that time. From Manchester and sounds like it:
It suits me just fine that I can't make out a lot of the words. There's also a new Janelle Monae song that nobody seems to be talking about, though it's fairly average, on first couple listens anyway. It's part of the soundtrack for the new film version of For Colored Girls (based on the choreopoem by Ntozake Shange), so it may have been made to order. I wouldn't take it as an indication of JM's future direction:

Bachar mar-Khalifé
I just discovered this album and am rapidly getting to like it more and more. This artist is one of the sons of (sometimes great, sometimes pretty awful) Lebanese musical giant Marcel Khalife. The first track is kind of prog. and jazzy, done in a way I find palatable. The second has a lot of (French) spoken word and heads into electronic music territory, but electronic music that sounds closer to what it was back when I listened to a lot of it, in the 80s (especially the first half). It's also got a post-minimalist classical sort of thing going on. I agree with the person calling for Democratia to be posted; it rocks pretty hard.
(EmilScherbe, you in particular should check these out, I think.) Last edited by Superficial Fan : 2010.12.30 at 01:45 PM. |

nearly 1 hour live recording
It's something suitable to my taste and his background info draw interest about Arab music. while I listened 2 clips you linked, read his father's Wikipedia description. Then listened some his father's YT clips mainly oud music ones. Then I listened some oud music from Japanese player Tsunemi Yuji on YT and one of clip he played Om Kolthoum's piece briefly, then I read her Wikipedia description, then.. |

Not even close to their most popular song, but this song by the Strokes is my personal favorite. Love the lyrics and the guitar in the song.
