I usually don't tag the genre part. Some of the stuff I listen to is just too hard to properly tag. If it means anything, iTunes has the tag "Alternative and Punk" for most Ringo stuff (including Mayonaka) when you play the cd.

But iTunes grabs that from the Gracenote CDDB thing right? So maybe that's what Toshiba EMI labels her music as.

If you feel like a sucker for Swedish music, you should check out http://itsatrap.com/ That guy is not Swedish (omg omg american!) but insanely good at knowing everything about the Swedish music scene. I'd say he's nuts. I haven't visited his page in quite some years though, but he's really in there... Other than that, I didn't really use last.fm that much even though it sure has its uses, it just points to bands I "ought to check out", but I've mostly already been acquainted to those and have them tagged "Fail" in my internal id3 tagging mechanism. Quite a few times I've downloaded stuff like "my compilation of the top 10 <genre>" or something like that. I find a song I like, then try to find out more about the artist behind that one. Then recently also randomly through youtube, myspace... and random live houses visits. Last edited by Jonny : 2007.06.03 at 01:35 PM. Reason: it's -> its |

I don't tag genres either but if I was going to tag I'd go off each individual cd... or just do a general jazz tag on them all. Jazz/Rock covers most of her stuff.

I'm fortunate enough (having played most of my life, gone to a music school, and now working as a musician) to have many amazing musicians as friends. Musician friends must never be overlooked as a valuable asset in finding good new music.
My second advice for finding good new music is to research the artists you like. Especially if it's in a style you're not super familiar with. The research can open the doors to hearing more names, and you can follow those names up and end up discovering something great, something overhyped, or something perfectly mediocre. A fantastic blog for Japanese music you can't usually find is Hitoshizuku. This guy finds and recommends killer great stuff that seldom shows up on Oricon. I've grabbed almost everything he's posted and not deleted one album (and I delete what I don't listen to). He's also a big SR/TJ fan. |

Usually both. Sometimes there are even streamable samples.
