Shiina Ringo via Tokyo Jihen, or Tokyo Jihen via Shiina Ringo?
This is sort of an offshoot of the "How Did We First Discover" thread, maybe it's already been done to death but here goes.
I've gotten to know people who were introduced to Ringo by way of Tokyo Jihen. This is completely opposite to me (I was "introduced" to TJ by way of Ringo), but it shouldn't be surprising since TJ sells a lot of records and not everyone buying them has a pre-determined Ringo attachment. So let's celebrate how different we all are by labeling ourselves. These are EXTREMELY LOADED QUESTIONS. 1. Which group are you in? A. FIRST GROUP: someone who became a fan of Shiina Ringo by way of Tokyo Jihen (TJ came first, in other words) B. SECOND GROUP: someone who became a fan of Tokyo Jihen by way of Shiina Ringo (SR came first) 2. Let's parse out some differences. A. FIRST GROUP: Was the TJ that introduced you to SR Phase 1 or Phase 2? If Phase 1, how do you feel about Phase 2? If Phase 2, how do you feel about Phase 1? B. SECOND GROUP: Would you really identify as a "fan" of TJ or as someone "tolerable" of TJ or as someone "morally and viscerally opposed" to TJ? 3. How do you feel? A. FIRST GROUP: that SR is the "promised land" and TJ is a group you feel grateful towards (for introducing you to SR) but not enthusiastically fond of? B. SECOND GROUP: that you sort of wish you were in the first group? For the record, I am: 1. B 2. "fan" 3. "no" |

1. Second group, why the hell are SR original fans second?
2. Morally and viscerally opposed. Originally i thought they would be the band of the decade. 3. What the fuck kind of question is this?

Well, it's a little more complicated than that, but.
1. B (First album I heard and got me hooked was HF, and that's not exactly just Ringo. Then started to listen to TJ. Then went to Ringo solo. So I'm more like a C) 2. Tolerable of TJ. 3. I'm good at the B group. |

I said they were "loaded" questions.
Sorta like, if you've only ever eaten cube steak and then had a filet mignon, would you resent all the cube steak you've eaten? By the same token, if you've only ever eaten filet mignon and then had to live on cube steak, would the resentment be even more intense? It's like that line in Wall Street when Daryl Hannah says "When you've had money and lost it, it can be much worse than never having had it at all!" Then Charlie Sheen says "That is BULLSHIT!" Whose side you on? |

1. Which group are you in?
Shiina came first. Naturally. 2. Let's parse out some differences. The only way I even tolerate TJ is because of SR, otherwise they would just be a 'neat Japanese band' that I've listened to once or twice. I'm not a 'fan' of TJ as such, but it's only natural that I have some interest in them because I was a big fan of SR's solo stuff. After all, it is still her. 3. How do you feel? No, because if I was in the first group I would be deluding myself. Come on, even if Tokyo Jihen is a 'good band', Shiina Ringo's older stuff is on a much HIGHER PLANE. There are plenty of 'good bands' and 'good artists' out there, and SR was on to something special back then. I became attached to Shiina Ringo because her first three albums totally clicked with me, and was expecting something special. Now I don't know what to think. |
