Yesterday, I listened to Vampire Weekend's debut album for the first time and was blown away. I gave them a short glance previously and dubbed them "2white4me." Had I not forced myself to listen to Graceland I probably would still resist. The musicianship is top notch.

I'd only bother with first album. No soul remains after it.

I liked Contra, but the schtick got really unbearable on some tracks. They definitely take themselves more seriously, which is bad!
Vampire Weekend is like the Girls (HBO Show) of music. |

Converge tonight. Can't wait to hear AWLWLB songs live.
Also @ turtlefu: shouldn't all the best music have its own "schtick" or "kitsch"? You seem to use these words as a negative all the time. But I agree, Contra is grating in the worst way.

Don't mistake a signature style with schtick. Schtick is more like a gimmick as opposed to a point of view. Well, as I use it.
I love/hate Vampire Weekend, even Contra. I like the music (catchy pop melodies! vague afro-pop/world music influences!) but hate the band itself (privileged white folk re purposing world music in more radio-friendly manner with no self-awareness!). (They dress well though I like their clothes) They need to make more songs that are fun instead of attempting to be serious. I don't think Contra is grating in the worst way, I enjoyed it. |

Well. Converge was great, as expected. The crowd however, are getting less tolerable. First time I saw Converge (for the You Fail Me tour), it was full of metal heads/hardcore fans, the second time, there were a much younger crowd (for Axe to Fall tour), this time it was 50% hipsters/obvious pitchfork readers (the beige and glasses were a dead giveaway)- no where near as big of a mosh this time round. It's a bit saddening but I guess it was to be expected. How anyone could stand still and just nod their head at a Converge set is beyond me.
Anyway, CLT-
A really nice album, I recommend anyone who's into this stuff to check it out. Carlx, I reckon it's right up your alley.

I hope Earl's album comes out well, and I actually hope Tyler surprises with Wolf. It's put up or shut up time for Odd Future
