Mr. Pillow, you reminded me (even though they are musically different, I believe) about Cecilia Zabala: Argentinian guitarist-singer-songwriter, but definitely a non-mainstream artist:
This time lyrics are in Portuguese because they were written by a Brazilian artist (can't remember the name) she met through Myspace; the music had been recorded instrumental only, just with the guitar until that. The way the guitar, her voice, the harmony and melody merges together make me experience something I can't describe with words, at least objectively talking. I got her '97 and '98 albums in 2005, but, while I liked "Venere" and "Eco de Sirene", the albums on a whole seemed much in the vein of late-90s alt-rock and didn't stick with me. From some clips her newer albums seem more sonically interesting, I'll have to get one of those~ ^^
Her album covers are pretty much always stunning though. Frozen mermaid~! The latter concept reminds me of:

@Carlx: It's a real shame I can't understand a single word she's singing. Portoguese is a very musical (and beautiful too, of course) language. Her singing, along with the melody, creates a complex (but striking) texture. Very interesting, I should check her songs out. Thanks for the recommendation. By the way, did you like "Parole di burro"?
@mizer_unmei: Oh, so I guess you had both "Confusa e felice" and "Mediamente isterica"? Her fans regard the latter as her best album, but I'm not fully convinced...it probably contains her most popular songs (among the fans I mean, not the media because of the lack of promotion), but the melancholic folk sonorities of her last two albums are far more desirable to a mindful listener. I could suggest you to listen to her 2006 album "Eva contro Eva" (the only one - if I remember correctly - to be sold on iTunes USA), which features more distinctive lyrics and melodies, too. (but, the cover of "Mediamente isterica" is probably her most original, the frozen mermaid in the fish market is adorable) Here's an example of what I call "distinctive lyrics" (the song references Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet") - performance starts at 1:48, you can skip the soundcheck part:
